This grading syllabus demonstrates the minimum required standards and should be used as a guideline for what is required for each grade.
In addition to the techniques listed in this syllabus, there are soft skill requirements too, including etiquette, behaviour, attitude, and commitment
The instructing team has the overall responsibility for ensuring that each grade awarded is done so legitimately. The decisions of the instructing team and grading panels are final.
There is more than one path to the top of the mountain, any decisions to not put a student forward for a grading, or to not award a grade, are done so with the best interests of the student and the Club at heart.
The Kata listing follows that of Tani-ha Shito-ryu Karate-do Kofukan International.
Kihon and Sparring syllabus is designed to adapt modern self defence and competitive, pressure tested, rulesets and techniques.
It is the opinion of the panel as to whether the technical proficiency, speed, power, and form of techniques are of a satisfactory standard for the grade that is being attempted
At the conclusion of a grading; students may be awarded a Distinction, Merit, Pass. Other outcomes are a Pass Minus whereby the grade is awarded on the day, but the student must undertake remedial training before attempting to grade again, or a Non-Award whereby the student is unable to complete their grading to a satisfactory standard
Gradings are carried out on a schedule set out by the club, these are intended to be February. June, and October of each year
Kyu B grades are optional for adults and mandatory for those under the age of 12, they are donated with a white stripe, where an orange belt with white stripe is considered “half way” to orange belt
In the interests of inclusion, diversity, equality, and health and safety, where appropriate and at the sole discretion of the Head Coach as advised by the Grading Panel any part of the syllabus may be omitted or modified to suit the individual needs of the grading student
Grade dependent, knowing the steps of a kata may not be considered a sufficient level of knowledge for a pass. Precision, power, and understanding may also be assessed.
Sessions requirement and Minimum Time are since previous grade.
